A Birthday, Properly Observed

Feb 10, 2026 11:43AM ● By Amy Palumbo-LeClaire

Luke turned four this year, and for the first time, he understood what a birthday truly meant: a reason for song, celebration, and cake. (Pumpkin cake.) He also understood that birthdays exist to justify something even more essential – time set aside to play with dog friends.

Domestic life is doggone good. Humans drape blankets over sleeping dogs, pour bone broth over kibble, and teach commands meant to guide a disciplined life. But nothing compares to dog play. Play is the highest calling. Play screams of FUN!

Luke’s fourth birthday followed suit.

“OBI!!!!”

Like Superman, Luke launched himself from the trunk of my car, beginning the circular, sniffing ritual known as the Hunt-for-Obi. His Labrador friend was somewhere. But where?

“OBI!! I’VE ARRIVED! GUESS WHAT? IT’S MY BIRTHDAY!!”

He bolted toward the lake house entrance – wrong door. A sharp left, a leg lift to christen a bush, several purposeful pavement sniffs, and then —

“Hi, Luke. Ready to play?”

Obi appeared with the casual confidence that defined his personality. Luke rushed him like a linebacker. The exchange was magnificently doggish. Dark and light blonde fur collided and spun like cotton candy until, just as suddenly, everything stopped.

They froze in a ceasefire, legs splayed, eyes locked.

What now?

Obi answered by grabbing a stuffed bunny.

Come and get it.

“You have to share, Obi!”

The dog friends galloped, wrestled, teased, nipped, and chased until they skidded to a stop at the tall glass doors off the kitchen.

We are ready to come in now.

Dog moms set down their tea and assumed authority.

“Sit. Easy. Give. Stay.”

The boys tried their best – but the hierarchy shifted.

“HAVEN’S HERE!”

The feisty female entered like a plot twist. Obi, who had been smitten with the sweet English Cream weeks earlier, was undone. He hovered. He hugged. He made his declaration clear.

Haven is my girlfriend. We’re even the same color, Luke.

Luke absorbed the information with a curious smile and resumed his place in the pecking order. He looked up at them with what could only be described as generosity.

Obi got himself a girl. I’m over it.

Luke was the birthday boy. And while play ranked high, cake ranked higher – especially cake that appeared just once a year.

It was time to sing.

“Happy birthday to you…”

Luke’s friends gathered around flames that shook dangerously atop pumpkin pupcakes. One wrong move, and our dogs would be burned, literally. Luke locked his gaze on the small, dancing fire. Last year, he had lifted his chin to the melody, visibly moved by the sound. His three-year-old self gazed up at me as if to say, It’s my birthday, Momma. Keep singing!

This year, the music struggled to compete. Cake pressed forward in his mind, urgent and undeniable.

“Happy birthday dear Luuuuke…”

The stretched syllable tested his patience.

It’s a one-syllable name, his expression suggested. Let’s stay focused.

“Happy birthday to you!”

I blew out the candles with one decisive breath and set the cupcake on the tile. The cake disappeared in a single gulp, leaving behind a clean floor and a satisfied birthday boy.

But as the room settled, something lingered.

For a moment, Luke lifted his head and looked around, as if taking inventory. The song faded. The humans relaxed. The rules loosened their grip.

Then someone dropped the stuffed bunny.

That was all it took.

Luke sprang forward, reborn. Obi lunged after him. Haven joined, triumphant and fast. The house filled again with the sound of skidding paws, playful growls, and the unmistakable thud of bodies colliding in joy. The bunny changed mouths. Alliances shifted. Nothing was owned for long.

No candles. No commands. No waiting.

Just dogs doing what dogs are meant to do – together.

Luke raced the length of the room, ears flying, heart full. This was the gift he had come for. Not cake, not song, but time unclaimed and friends at his side.

Luke’s fourth birthday, properly observed.
