“Eephus” coming to Soldier’s Field in Douglas
What’s an eephus, you ask? Well, it’s a slow, lobbing pitch that, by throwing off a hitter’s timing, can be the most difficult pitch in baseball to connect with.
Red Sox pitching legend Bill Lee , aka Spaceman, was a master of the rare pitch. And he’s coming to Douglas on Saturday, August 9 to appear at a screening of the baseball film, “Eephus” that celebrates this off-speed and weirdly named way to serve up a ball to a batter.
Free to all and sponsored by the Simon Fairfield Public Library and the Douglas Recreation Commission, “Eephus” will be shown at Solder’s Field, 2 Manchaug Road.
The movie was filmed at Soldier’s Field and is free and family-friendly. The fun starts at 6:30 p.m. with the movie starting at 8 p.m. under the starts. The film crew will play a reunion game at 3 p.m. so come and cheer them on!
“Eephus” was, written and directed by New Hampshire native Carson Lund with participation from Douglas residents. This special event is a homecoming celebration, honoring the town’s contribution to the film and showcasing its deep sense of community spirit.
Attendees can enjoy food trucks, live music, and a special appearance by former Red Sox pitcher Bill “Spaceman” Lee, who appears in the film and famously threw the eephus pitch. Gates will open to the public at 6:30 p.m. Families are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets for seating on Soldier’s Field. Kids’ activities will be available throughout the evening, including slow-pitch softball, giant Jenga, corn hole, and Bowling for Books.
